Part of sustainable forestry is just paying attention to what trees provide all year long. This dormant hickory - near the shortest day of the year - is still playing host to a giant silk moth cocoon. I’m hopeful it’s a Polyphemus moth an
Nothing fancy - just a simple horse fence. But it feels good (and fits with the customer’s ethics) that it’s made of 100% native locust and oak. Fun, simple, utilitarian, and green.
Native PawPaw seedlings in the ground! These versatile fruit trees can thrive in the understory or clearings within our working woods. And they are part of our ongoing work to increase the biodiversity and climate adaptability of the forest. Thanks t
Just finished this shed for Chariho H.S.’s Agriculture Tech program and their garden club. All native lumber including some live edge shelves.
Our camp fire wood stand is being put to bed for the off season. Thanks to everyone who supported us! I hope you had some lovely camp fires. This “Pick-what-you-want, Pay-what-you-can” stand will be back next year.
I received a good reminder yesterday from an American Chestnut in our working woodlot: natural resilience is all around us. The timing seemed well placed, since running a small business leaves one feeling like more than half of everything is constan
I Don’t often post about my tree work: this is a good example: beech tree close to a house and driveway with beech leaf disease (biotic) and significant beach bark disease (fungal). As a licensed arborist I removed the tree using professional e
SO GRATEFUL for this collaboration with RI Mycological Society, Southside Community Land Trust, and Groundwork RI!!! Lots of exploration and hands-on learning, centered on the role of fungi in healthy forests ecosystems.
Set of 18th century sawhorses for a Newport Historical Society event in July - where these will be used in demonstrations of historical woodworking techniques. Neat challenge to make something new look old…
New outdoor learning area at Chariho Regional Middle School. All native oak, plus Locust edge boards. Built (and milled) with the help of a senior in Chariho’s Agricultural Tech program. #charihotech #chariho
Fun little plant shelf build! Porch garden weather is here, and these burl feet look great IMO with the oiled live-edge tops. Creative process with the owner was a joy: exploring potential layouts and letting the wood inform the design
Tomorrow’s mushroom log event is canceled due to the rain… but if you can pop into the woods before the rain there are many beautiful things coming up.
One week out for this great collaboration! Come join us at the farm and make your own shiitake log to take home or give to a friend. This is a free public event, but any voluntary donations will be split 50/50 to support the RI Mycological Society an
Recently wrapped up these dual purpose stairs. Custom-milled locust and oak. These diffuse water to correct erosion at a major runoff point, and they improve access to the garden’s upper level.
Happy International Women’s Day!
We are so lucky to have our newest intern and our employee Taylor working with us at @maiseystreefarm

These two powerful women are helping the forest thrive 🌳💪🏼
